How was it possible for the Mayflower to reach Plymouth rock on a single tank of gas?

My car can only go 600 miles on a tank, since it has been possible for the Mayflower to travel thousands of miles on a tank?

    When they ran out of gas, they started rowing. That is why so many of them had weak arms when they got to Plymouth Rock.
